Flexischools has released new national research which brings together the voices of over 5000 parents and 100 canteen operators from right across Australia, exploring what Australian parents value most when making decisions about school life and family routines.
With cost-of-living pressures, parent overwhelm, student wellbeing and healthy eating currently top of mind, we wanted to understand how today’s modern families are feeling.
The research reveals that Australian parents are more likely to value convenience and time-saving than affordability when choosing what works best for their families.
For modern school canteens & tuckshops, this finding reinforces something canteen operators already know:
Families trust their school canteen to be a practical, reliable partner, a place that helps them care for their children, even when life is busy.
Interestingly, the research also found that canteen operators selected affordability as a key benefit of their service, reflecting their day-to-day understanding of how important accessible, nutritious food is for families.
Canteen & tuckshops today aren't just about getting a convenient school lunch; they’re helping shape healthy habits and build independence for our kids.
Flexischools' Simplifying School Life Report found that:
75% of parents say tuckshops are healthier now, than in the past
72% of parents rate convenience as a marker of tuckshops’ good value
42% see the tuckshop as their child’s first money management experience.
For canteens and tuckshops, this reinforces their dual role: they know they’re already convenient (they see it every day), but they also take pride in keeping meals good value and within reach for families, while ensuring quality and care.
